5 Signs Your Garage Door Spring Needs Replacement
Your garage door spring is one of the hardest-working parts of your home. It handles hundreds of pounds of door weight every single day. When it starts to fail, the signs are usually clear - if you know what to look for. Here are the five most common warning signs that your spring is on its way out.
1. A Loud Bang From the Garage
The most dramatic sign of a broken torsion spring is a loud bang - often described as a gunshot. This happens when the spring snaps under tension. If you hear this sound and your door suddenly stops working, the spring has likely broken. Do not try to operate the door manually or with the opener until the spring is replaced.
2. The Door Feels Extremely Heavy
Garage door springs counterbalance the weight of the door, making it easy for the opener - and for you - to lift. If you disconnect the opener and try to lift the door manually, it should feel relatively light (20–30 lbs). If it feels like you are lifting 150–300 lbs, the spring is broken or has lost tension.
3. The Opener Strains But Won't Lift
If your opener motor is running but the door barely moves - or only opens a few inches before the opener reverses - this is usually a spring problem, not an opener problem. The opener is not designed to lift a door without spring assistance. Forcing it can burn out the motor or strip the gear.
4. A Visible Gap in the Spring
Torsion springs sit on a metal rod above the door. A broken torsion spring will have a visible gap - usually 2–3 inches - somewhere along its length. If you see this gap, the spring needs to be replaced immediately. Do not use the door.
5. The Door Opens Crooked or Unevenly
If your door rises unevenly - one side goes up faster than the other - this often means one of two springs has broken or lost tension. The working spring is lifting its side while the broken side drags. This puts severe stress on the cables, drums, and opener and can cause secondary damage quickly.
